There are plenty of concerns in HR. I will touch on one for now. Retention. According to Harvard business school Why People Really Quit Their Jobs (hbr.org), they looked at Facebook's research on retention and realized that people left jobs when the job was not enjoyable and when their skills were not being utilized effectively.
I can attest to this issue. While working at Compass we had a retention issue with new hires. We onboarded direct support professionals (DSP). The DSP had 10 courses they needed to complete prior to starting. So we initially brought the staff in for orientation and then had them complete the 10 courses. We found that new hires dropped off after orientation at an alarming rate without completing the training. We then changed our tactics and had them complete the training before orientation and then after orientation they could start their work sooner, we noticed that retention improved 10%.
Why? Staff were able to utilized their skills sooner and engage with the clients after orientation that was more enjoyable than completing online courses. The quicker we were able to have staff do what they were hired to do the better we were able to retain them. This can be translated to after onboarding. Companies need to be mindful to have staff continuously engage in utilizing and developing their skills so they feel challenged, productive and fulfilled.
